About the Board

The Toronto Police Service Board is the seven-member civilian body that governs and oversees the Toronto Police Service under Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019. It is composed of three (3) members of council and one (1) member of the public, appointed by City Council and three (3) public members appointed by the Government of Ontario.

The Board is accountable to both the community and to the Inspector General of Policing. The Inspector General of Policing is a provincial oversight body that ensures compliance with policing legislation and regulations, including adequate and effective policing and Board member code of conduct.

The Board employs members of the Toronto Police Service and is responsible for ensuring that the Chief of Police administers the police service, including hiring and termination. It is dedicated to ensuring that Toronto’s police services are delivered in partnership with our communities, to keep the city the best and safest place to be.
