DERIVATION |
|
The policy was drafted following a review of relevant legislation as well as the corresponding City of Toronto policy that applies to Members of Toronto City Council. The receiving of gifts and benefits by members of the Toronto Police Services Board is governed by the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act as well as the Police Services Act, O. Reg. 421/97 – Members of Police Services Boards – Code of Conduct.
The policy is adapted from the Code of Conduct for Members of Council – City of Toronto. It also reflects the wording used in the Province of Ontario’s Members’ Integrity Act.
It is important that Board Members are held to extremely high standards of conduct. They must, at all times, act with integrity and discharge their duties in a manner that inspires public confidence.
It is the policy of the Toronto Police Services Board that:
- No Board Member will accept a fee, advance, gift or personal benefit that is connected directly or indirectly with the performance of his or her duties of office.
Exceptions
A Board Member does not violate the policy provided that:
- The compensation is authorized by law;
- The gifts or benefits are ones that normally accompany the responsibilities of office which are received as an incident of protocol, custom, or social obligations; or
- The gifts or benefits are suitable mementos of a function honouring the member.
