Board Congratulates Toronto Police Service on Achieving Gold Certification in Mental Health at Work®

Toronto, Ontario – The Toronto Police Service Board (Board) proudly congratulates the Toronto Police Service (Service) on achieving the esteemed Canada Awards for Excellence (CAE) Gold Certification in Mental Health at Work®. This certification highlights the Service’s unwavering commitment to fostering a psychologically healthy and safe workplace, in alignment with the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.
“We are thrilled that the Service has achieved this certification,” said Board Chair Shelley Carroll at today’s Board Meeting, where the certification was presented to Chief Demkiw by Mr. Scott Slater, President of Excellence Canada. “This accomplishment underscores the Board and Service’s dedication to mental health and well-being, ensuring that our Members feel supported and valued. We believe that a healthy workplace is essential for productivity and overall success.”
In 2019, the Board’s Mental Health and Addictions Panel (MHAAP) collaborated closely with the Service to launch its Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, which serves as a blueprint for MHAAP’s mandate, with a specific focus on Service Member wellness. In 2020, the Service introduced its Member Wellbeing Strategy.
“These strategies place a necessary emphasis on the mental health and wellness of our Members,” said Ann Morgan, co-Chair of MHAAP. “Our Members routinely face the most difficult, intense, and challenging situations. It is critical that we not only implement relevant programming and initiatives to effectively support workplace mental health but also continue to encourage the cultural shifts necessary to remove stigma and inspire dialogue.”
The Mental Health at Work Framework offers a comprehensive roadmap for organizations to foster, support, and implement exemplary mental health programs. To attain the Award certification, an organization must exhibit exceptional performance by adhering to stringent standards, demonstrating continuous improvement, measuring progress, and undergoing thorough verification.
The Board is immensely grateful for the work done by the community members of MHAAP, and the initiatives the Service has undertaken to achieve this significant milestone.
