Toronto Police Services Board Welcomes New Board Member, Ms. Nadine Spencer

TORONTO: Today, the Toronto Police Services Board announced the appointment of Ms. Nadine Spencer, who was appointed by the City of Toronto on March 29, 2023, for a four-year term.
Ms. Spencer is currently the Interim CEO of the Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA). A seasoned entrepreneur, Ms. Spencer has founded multiple businesses, including BrandEQ Group Inc., a social change marketing, communications and PR agency with operations in Toronto, New York, and Kingston, Jamaica. As Interim CEO of BBPA, she has helmed several initiatives aimed at fostering economic opportunities within the Black community at all levels, including the RiseUp pitch competition and entrepreneurship training program, the Business Advisory Implementation Development Services (BAIDS) program, and various innovative programs launched in collaboration with the Diversity Institute and Future Skills Centre.
An immigrant to Canada early in her life, Ms. Spencer is particularly attuned to the challenges faced by newcomers with intersectional identities, especially in the Black community, where over 60% of the population identify as immigrants. Thus, as a founding board member of the Federation for African Canadian Economics (FACE) and founder of the Boss Women program, Ms. Spencer has spearheaded paradigm-shifting, culturally relevant strategies to promote generational wealth among Black Canadians.
As Founder of BrandEQ, Ms. Spencer has driven strategic growth and brand visibility for a diverse roster of clients, including major national brands, government entities, banks, prominent non-profits, and high-profile individuals. Above all, she has established herself as a leading industry expert, cultivating market competitiveness for an expansive array of organizations. She has always centered equity and inclusion in her work, logging an extensive track record in community engagement strategies, and tackling racial bias through BrandEQ Black, the agency’s cultural sensitivity arm.
Interim Chair Ann Morgan expressed her enthusiasm about Ms. Spencer’s appointment, stating, "The Board looks forward to working with Ms. Spencer and welcomes the unique expertise and important perspective she will bring as a visionary entrepreneur, as well as a collaborative, inspirational, and dedicated community-builder."
Ms. Spencer was officially sworn in as a Board Member on April 5 and will join the Board at its Special Board Meeting, which takes place April 13, 2023. She will be formally introduced in-person at the Board's next regular public meeting on April 28, 2023.
Holding a BA Degree in Political Science (with Honours) from York University, Ms. Spencer has utilized her vast background to serve on numerous corporate and not-for-profit boards, including a two-year term as President of the Junior League of Toronto, a global non-profit women's organization focused on volunteerism, women's empowerment, and community strengthening. She is also an active member of the 50-30 Challenge Committee and the Diversity Institute Advisory Committee. Additionally, she works with various charitable organizations, empowering impoverished and disenfranchised women to achieve prosperity through education and entrepreneurship.
Interim Chair Morgan further remarked, "I have no doubt that Ms. Spencer's voice will be invaluable as the Board continues to develop and refine its priorities, working with the Toronto Police Service and alongside Toronto's communities to ensure that policing services meet community members' expectations in every regard. I very much look forward to the work we will do together."
