Board Announces Public Meetings as Part of Chief Selection Process
The Toronto Police Services Board is in the process of a comprehensive and transparent process to select the next Chief of Police for the Toronto Police Service. The Board recognizes that the selection of Chief is one of the most important decisions it makes. As the Board, Service and City continue to reimagine community safety and modernize, the next Chief will play a critical role leading the dedicated Members of the Service.
The Board’s process has been informed by recent Board and City Council decisions concerning policing reform and enhanced community engagement in the Chief selection process. Board Chair Jim Hart emphasized that “the search has been designed to be independent and wide-ranging, and grounded in public engagement and consultation. Especially in a time of heightened engagement around important policing issues, the Board is focused on ensuring that the public is consulted meaningfully as part of this process and looking to most effectively engage the diverse voices of Toronto in identifying the qualities and priorities that the people of Toronto want to see in their next Chief of Police.”
As part of this Chief selection process, Environics Research, on behalf of the Board, is conducting a series of public consultations. These consultations, the most extensive for a Chief selection process that the Board has organized to date, will provide opportunities for people across the City to share input on this topic, ensuring that a diverse range of voices are heard. Given the current pandemic guidelines, these consultations will take place virtually using Zoom.
The public consultation forums have been scheduled for residents of Etobicoke, Downtown Toronto, Scarborough, and North York as follows:
Dates and Times:
- Etobicoke – Tuesday, March 30 – 6-8PM
- Downtown Toronto – Wednesday, March 31 – 6-8PM
- Scarborough – Wednesday, April 7 – 6-8PM
- North York – Tuesday, April 13 – 6-8PM
